Photograph of the Manchester University Settlement Playground
Description
The founders of the Manchester Art Museum and the University Settlement believed that physical recreation was as important for children as aesthetic and moral education. This photograph of the playground provided by the University Settlement (next to its residence on Every Street) contrasts with images of children on the neighbouring streets of Ancoats. Boys and girls were also taught to swim, there was a tennis club for young people, and Swedish Gymnastics classes for the older girls.
