Photograph of Children in a Street in Ancoats

In 1903, Professor Francis Greenwood Peabody established The Social Museum at Harvard University. The aim of the Museum was "to promote investigations of modern social conditions and to direct the amelioration of industrial and social life." The Museum amassed a large collection of photograhs relating to the international social reform movement, including some 20 images of the activities Manchester Art Museum and University Settlement. This picture of a street close to the Art Museum shows the environment in which local children lived and played. When this picture was taken, in 1903, children over 12 were still allowed to work in factories.
