The Dialectics of Modernity: Designing Public Spaces has been developed between 2017 and 2018 within the framework of a 'Mnemosyne Fellows' placement (a short-term Digital Humanities placement for Humanities PhD students). This was run in collaboration with the Research Staff of The Dialectics of Modernity project, DH@Manchester and The University of Manchester Research IT.

In line with the principles of the project, this interactive exhibition focuses specifically on Art for Public Spaces and its configurations in interwar Italy. The nine Collections (State Patronage: The Triennali; Performancing Fascism; Designing Modern Space through Public Art; State Patronage: National Art and the Quandriennali; The Power of the Arts; The Avant-garde within the Arte di Stato; Victories; Between Arte Sacra and Arte di Stato; Shaping the New Man and the Urban Fabric) serve as focus points on as many manifestations of the debate on modernity and modernization in Fascist years.

Similarly, the Sections composing the central exhibition offer guidance to navigate the arguments of the project's underpinning thesis, concerning the "unique synergy between artistic and political discourses about modernist aesthetics and totalitarian politics".

The project staff wishes to thank the following institutions for their collaboration to The Dialectics of Modernity website and to this online exhibition.
